1.  The International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV) is the organization that the AVA follows concerning general event policy rules and the International Achievement Awards Program. The IVV has started to publish a new newsletter called, Just One Minute! Its purpose is to let volkssporters know what is being done internationally with the hope of getting more people engaged and more re-energized about the IVV and volkssporting.

This newsletter is an initiative of the newly elected IVV Vice President, Graham Fawcett from Canada. Graham has served as the President of the Canadian Federation. Just One Minute! will be published at irregular intervals and we will forward each edition to all AVA clubs, Officers and Directors.

The first edition of Just One Minute! is here. It is intended to reach the grassroots level so please distribute it to your membership.

2.  The East County Windwalkers Powell Butte YRE0739 will not be ready on Jan 1st.  As soon as it is ready (hopefully by January 21), I’ll send out another notice.

Subject: No Vancouver Discovery Walk Festival in 2012 or beyond

The Vancouver International Discovery Walk Festival will not be held in

2012 or beyond.

For any questions, please email abyrd628@comcast.net

While the event was still very successful, we couldn't find enough

successors to take over the planning and organization of the walk.

Many thanks to our former board of directors and former event coordinators

and registrars: Bill and Catherine Byrd, Anne Byrd, Burt and Romana Paynter,

Liz Rose, Arlene Miller, Krista Van Veen, Mary-Elise Diedrich, Dennis

Johnson, and our mail picker-uppers Lillian Fullerton and Barbara Baker.

The event could not have developed as a success without former Mayor Royce

Pollard and Kelly Punteney of the city of Vancouver.

My love to each of them. I'll miss seeing so many families and young

children participating in a volkssport event, and welcoming groups from

countries around the world and military groups from our area.

President’s Corner – Jan Breneman

PREZ SEZ

A big THANK YOU to Linda Barneson for officiating at our December meeting. All reports are that it was a combination of short, productive, and fun! AWW members wanted to set any date aside for the Pacific Park walk, just to save it – and I have sanctioned this one for Saturday, May 26. I’ll be the chair, but it is relatively close (planning wise) to our anniversary event in Camas on July 21, so it will take extra attention to stay organized on both.

Last month I reported here that many state and national walk challenges are changing dramatically in 2012. Do you also know that the AVA’s new “Strolling Somewhere Over the Rainbow” challenge program includes all the walks in the state of Washington? Quoting the description:  “…Complete 20 different sanctioned events where the route is located in or in sight of a color-named place anywhere in the world: any city, county, country, area (like Black Hills), place (like Yellowstone Park), state (like Nevada - known as "The Silver State"), rivers or any body of water, or mountains with the name of a color in it. Names for any and all shades of colors also qualify.” Washington is known as the Evergreen State, ergo the blanket qualification. The challenge contact Lois Head has confirmed our status. You might consider keeping one or two challenges to maintain your walk motivation into the new year.

And finally, another reminder that as of January 1, our Washougal Start Point has moved to Papa’s Ice Cream, on Main Street, 2 blocks east of the former site. This is a big change, and old habits die hard, so please pass this info along to as many of your walking buddies as you can.

Rambling Riddle

Answer to the riddle from December:  Unscramble the following: roforkad. Answer:  Fork in the road.

WHY WALK WHEN YOU CAN TRAVELATE?

If you can’t be bothered to walk, use a travelator. Travelators are escalators that also carry you along on the flat. The longest in the world is the 800-meter moving walkway on Hong Kong island, which basks under the prosaic title of Central-Mid-Levels Escalator and Walkway System.

What Other Clubs Are Doing – Joe Titone

1.  In the summer, I spent a few days playing bridge in Victoria, B.C.  I had time to do one volkswalk.  The instructions were written for the locals, but they did have one item I hadn’t seen before.  Instead of writing out Turn Right or Turn Left, they used the abbreviations TR or TL.  Note bold font.  This saves a lot of repetitive work.

Note from Jan: A few years ago, some trail directions used a simple, bolded L or R for left/right. I like that better than the TL/TR, but I don't even see those abbreviations any more. Regardless of the style, it does save a lot of time and duplication when writing, though.

2.  Lena Davis spent some time in Sacramento.  Their Walking Sticks club has a unique way of doing their written instructions.  I wrote their computer person, and the technique he described was so complicated that I tried to duplicate it on my own.  I’m quite proficient with Word and was able to almost get there.  I admit that anyone who’s worked as a secretary or administrative assistant knows more about Word than I do.

Susan Treacy stepped in an easily duplicated what turned out not to be very complicated.  Here’s an excerpt (only the left side is shown):

EXIT hospital and turn RIGHT to Lovejoy

2

LEFT on Lovejoy to 21st

3

8

RIGHT across Vista CAREFULLY to Montgomery Dr. and cross.

9

LEFT on Montgomery Dr., walking on the right side to where it meets 21st.

There a similar table on the right.  Note that comments can be emphasized by combining rows.  In 2012, some Of Rose City’s instructions may be in this format.
