Legacy Hospital/Salmon Creek Walk - Earl Bowen

As the event chairperson, I wish to thank everyone who helped make the walk a great big success.  We had over 200 walkers and made over $300 on the walk, the best the club has done in both areas in recent times.  Even though there was a light rain most of the day, the walkers all seemed to enjoy the route and be able to get out and walk.

Before the event was over on Saturday evening, a few problems arose, but there was those who stepped up and did some extra work which was much appreciated and made things go smoothly.

Thanks to all the following for their work and effort to complete the walking event on a very successful note:  Pat Gorman, Linda Barneson,

Jan Breneman, Daryl Pulley, Nira Lang, Carol Jensen, Cheryl Snodgrass, Dick Baker, Barbara Baker, Phyllis Clancy, Leah Riedel, Jean Moeller,

Alice McKay and her son Charlie, Drea Collins, Jill McLean, Joan and Don Heins, Liz Connors and Karen Ackley, Julie Jacobson, plus anyone else I may have missed.

Remember the walks we have scheduled for later this year, volunteer to help make them a success also, and support the walk chairperson.

1.
The Hood River, OR, YR 1607, Event #84417 is temporarily closed.  Will advise when it is back up.

2.  Hello all – here’s a PDF file of our upcoming Tri-State Walks. 5 Walks, 3 States, 3 Days and asking if you could forward same to the clubs in your area. These walks seem popular to out of state walkers trying to complete many of the AVA Special Programs.

The Aquarius Casino Resort extends us a special rate so the weekend is quite affordable and the weather will be just right that time of year. We will also have a Hospitality Suite as start/finish point, one of the few that are air-conditioned and have a flat screen TV!

Thanks in advance for your help,

3.  Here is an event this is DIFFERENT.  It is on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

From: Bill Rusby <rusbyw@msn.com>

Some months back you offered to help advertise our Northwest Tulip Trekker three day event on Camano Island.  Brochure

CAMANO ISLAND SPRING GETAWAY WALKING FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

Join us for this unique 3-day event 11-13 April offering two walks each day for a total of 6 events.

We offer a specially sanctioned event each of the three mornings. After the sanctioned event Sunday morning, you have the opportunity to walk the new year around event at the Cama Beach State Park followed by a pot luck dinner down by the beach and cabins in the Park.   Whether staying in the cabins or not, you are invited to join us and share your favorite entrée, salad, or desert with the group.

On Monday and Tuesday, join us for specially sanctioned group walks on Camano Island starting at 10am, followed by no-host lunches at the Elger Bay café and Camano Lodge that are both on the Island. To round out your days and make you sleep well, meet us for group walks at 2pm of the new Iverson Point Preserve year around trail on Camano Island, and the Stanwood year around.

This is a good chance to see Washington’s newest State Park which was featured in Sunset Magazine as one of the nation’s top “Hideaways by the Sea”. We recommend that you take advantage of this opportunity to stay in the newly renovated, heated cabins at Cama Beach State Park at the budget winter rates.

4.  I received information recently from AVA saying that there were approximately 23000 participants in Northwest YREs in the year 2009.  With approximately 400 events, that’s an average of about 57 per YRE.  How does your YRE stack up against the average?

5.  As you consider the motions that will be discussed at the next NEC, here is something to consider when discussing the motion to further define hike vs walk.

Part 1 – INCLINE  -  Part 2 – TERRAIN

1. very little hill or stair climbing
almost entirely on pavement, probably suitable for baby stroller

2.  some moderate hill or stair climbing
a significant part of the walk takes place on well-groomed trails with very little
more difficult terrain

3.  some significant hill or stair climbing
a significant part of the walk takes place on somewhat difficult terrain
(rocky / rooted paths)

4.  a good deal of significant hill or stair climbing
a significant part of the walk takes place on very difficult terrain

5.  many steep hills or high altitude trails
the majority of the walk takes place on very difficult terrain

6.  A time change -  my Earth Day Walk on April 17 will be shown to start at 8:00 a.m. in The Northwest Pathfinder.  A late change is that it will have to start at 9:00 a.m. instead.  The change was made too late to get into The Northwest Pathfinder.  It IS however on the AVA website.

President’s Corner – Jan Breneman

Earl Bowen deserves big CONGRATULATIONS for his great work on the Legacy Salmon Creek walk. He did an outstanding job dealing with the many details in the week leading up to the event – all with his customary calm. Aside from the “usual” tasks, trailer parking and a sudden AVA insurance request by the hospital, (and that’s just what I know about) added to the stress level. Thanks also to Dick Baker, who was a major help with organizing the ESVA state meeting. Both that and the walk itself were huge successes. Thanks for all your work, guys!

Our next walk on May 1 is shaping up nicely. The route is in neighborhoods north of the Firstenburg Community Center, a brand new area not volkswalked before. The unusual afternoon start/finish hours will help the Firstenburg Community Center better deal with an always busier morning schedule and parking issues. Already I’ve received offers of help from a couple of AWW members on that day, which I truly appreciate. The brochure will be finalized very soon.

In the next couple of weeks, I will finally be turning over the AWW website management to Liz Connors who already has a few new ideas. Change always means opportunity, and I’m confident the site is in great hands. Check it out from time to time to see what’s new!

Look up http://walkers.meetup.com/574/. This is a site managed by a woman from the Sound Steppers in Seattle and has possibilities for us volkssporters.

ALERT! The downtown PUD community room is booked for our customary June Annual Meeting/potluck date, so our date OR the place may change. We are working on alternatives and all ideas are welcome.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

Treasurer Jean Moeller and Membership Director Phyllis Clancy work closely together on the membership, especially this time of year, and report that the membership renewal rate is brisk.

The renewal period will close April 1 and the fully updated membership list will be sent to all current members in May. Membership in the club implies sharing your information with fellow members, but if for any reason, you do not wish your information to be published, please let us know beforehand.

If you have not yet renewed, it’s not too late. Annual fees are $6/single or $12/family. Send to AWW, PO Box 241, Vancouver, WA 98666-0241. We are glad you choose to remain with All Weather Walkers. Please let us know how we can keep you motivated in your walking regimen, and what is needed to make All Weather Walkers better.

I’m co-editor of USC’s Staff Retirement Assoc. newsletter, and the following is taken from that publication.  It was contributed by a former co-worker:

READABILITY is a free button for your Web browsers toolbar (get it at lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability). When you click it, Readability eliminates everything from the Web page you’re reading except the text and photos. No ads, blinking, links, banners, promos or anything else. Set it up, add it to your toolbar, boot your site, then click on Readability.  Voila!!

Editor’s note: I had the pleasure of working with Elaine, and she’s been a frequent contributor.  She’s also reliable, but any computer advice should be taken with a grain of salt because of the threat of malware.  You don’t have to worry in this case as a web search turned up (among others): http://www.macworld.com/article/143056/2009/09/readability.html
