NORTH BONNEVILLE; 10KM, Rated 2; 5KM, Rated 1
This small, quiet town was relocated in the mid-70s when the
second powerhouse of Bonneville Dam was built. We walked paved town paths; the wooded trails in Fort Cascades National Historic
Site; along the Columbia River; the natural path circling Strawberry Island; a
remote pond teeming with wildlife; and past a mountain man encampment featuring
a black
power shoot and trader booths.
Lewis & Clark Trail Program
Lewis & Clark named this area “Strawberry Island” (formerly Hamilton
Island, now renamed) for the wild and tasty fruit found here. They observed
abundant wildlife and much Indian activity when first passing by in November
1805 and on their return east in April 1806.
