North Bonneville, NW08/Y1616; Seasonal April 1 thru September 30

Walk on paved pedestrian/bike paths through this small, quiet town, re-located in the mid-1970s when the second powerhouse of Bonneville Dam was built.

Scenic views of Hamilton Creek, Pierce Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Greenleaf Lake, Bass Lake natural area, the Columbia River Gorge and Cascade Mountains. Also pass by the quaint Cascade Cemetery. The 5k route is all on level paved paths and a few street shoulders.

    Lewis & Clark named this area “Strawberry Island” (now called Hamilton Island) for the wild and tasty fruit found there. They observed abundant wildlife and much Indian activity when first passing by on November 2, 1805 and again on April 6, 1806.

    Restrooms and water at start/finish. Some limited facilities on route. The Bass Lake nature trail will require a shortened route for strollers; 5km route OK for wheelchairs. WSC: Water – Lakes, Bridges; History Monuments, Cemeteries. Skamania County.  

Directions to The Store at North Bonneville:

North Bonneville is on State Route 14, north of the Columbia River, between Mileposts 37 & 38. From North or South, take Interstate-5 or Interstate-205 to SR Highway 14 along the Columbia River.

From Washington – from I-5 or I-205, take SR-14 east to North Bonneville, which is on the south (right) side of the highway. Right at Cascade Drive to The Store/Chevron station on right-hand side of road.

From Oregon – take I-84 to Exit 44 (Cascade Locks/Stevenson). Cross into Washington state over the Bridge of the Gods (toll). Turn west (left) on SR-14 for about 4 miles to North Bonneville. Turn south (left) from highway. Right at Cascade Drive to The Store/Chevron station on right-hand side of road.

Skamania County Public Transit has service three times every weekday (not weekends or major holidays) from Fisher's Landing Transit Center in Vancouver to the city entrance in North Bonneville, right next to The Store/Chevron Station. This allows a walker to spend an entire morning, afternoon, or even an entire day to do this walk and explore parts of the gorge further east (or Skamania to the west).
