Pres. Chat – Liz Connors

Well, here we are again for another year ending and another year starting for All Weather Walkers.

I want to thank Joe Titone for taking on the responsibilities again for the annual potluck.... great turn out with great food!!

Everyone needs to say thanks to Earl Bowen and Jan Breneman for the past three years of hard work and dedication for keeping the club going strong!!  I've taken on the Presidency again for another year so I'm looking forward to working with everyone again.  Thank you Earl for giving in and taking on the Vice-Presidency again for another year! I know it is just routine for you!

Remember, we need to be thinking of new routes or ways to change our existing YRE's for the upcoming year.

Again, Thanks everyone!!

Walks from the Past – Joe Titone

In June 2008, Metro, a regional government organization (http://www.oregonmetro.gov/)

sponsored a tour of Nob Hill, part of Portland’s Northwest district.  Led by noted author/historian Laura Foster, the event was a kickoff for the publication Walk There!

Ms. Foster became known to the walking community after the publication of Portland Hill Walks, subtitled: 20 Explorations in Parks and Neighborhoods.  This is a thoroughly researched book and you don’t even have to do the walks to enjoy it.  She’ll be publishing another book of Portland walks in November.

If you go to Metro’s web site, the lower right-hand corner has a link to more details about the book which was given to all who attended the Nob Hill event.

You have 3 ways to get a copy:

1)    pick up from one of the many places (e.g. Kaiser Permanente offices) that will receive a supply of the books

2)    have Metro mail you a copy for a small fee

3)    download the book or parts thereof from Metro’s web site

JOIN THE AWW CHALLENGE. There is still plenty of time to complete the first half of the year – contact Liz Connors at (360) 798-6956 or lconnors@pacifier.com to get your free books. The Weekend Walking program is incorporating several of our YREs so you can walk with the group and qualify for the Grand Prize at the end of the year.

AWW Challenge Completions

Congratulations to those people who have completed the AWW Challenge so far:

First Half-Year

Barbara Baker

Dick Baker

Jan Breneman

Jean Moeller

Second Half-Year

A new AWW patch and two free AWW walk certificates will be awarded to each paid person who completes either or both halves of the year. Walkers doing both halves are entered into the grand prize drawing next February and have a choice in the second half of getting an AWW free walk instead of the patch. Full details about the Challenge were mailed earlier this year, and can also be found at www.allweatherwalkers.org.

Does your name belong here? Please let Joe Titone know if you have finished the program.

The Importance of Walking

-----Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.

My grand mother started walking five miles a day when she was 60.
Now she's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell she is.

The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks.
Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.

I have to walk early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

The advantage of walking every day is that you die healthier.

If you are going to try cross-country walking, start with a small country.

............And last but not least,

You could run this over to your friends but why not just e-mail it to them!

Weekend Walking is back.  Check our web site for the schedule:

http://home.earthlink.net/~awwliz/weekend/weekend.htm

If you’re doing the AWW challenge, we’ll be doing many of the AWW YREs during these walks.  It’s a great chance to walk with a group and work on completing your challenge card.  Remember we’ll always have 2 leaders, one at the front, and one at the rear so if you’re slower or want to walk a lesser distance, someone can help you.

YRE Renewals – Jan Breneman

Soon the YRE renewals will be upon us, and several classic routes will return unchanged, such as Frenchman’s Bar and Lacamas Lake. But others need “freshening up”, especially if our AWW Challenge is to continue for 2009.

Volunteers are needed to search out new or modified trails from our existing Start Points. In a couple of cases, we can re-use former routes, but the directions need to be checked, wheeled and updated to allow for recent changes in neighborhoods or roads. The AVA national office allows a couple of months, usually plenty of time, to complete the process.

Also, if you have any ideas for a new 10k walk route, either as a regular event or a Year ‘Round, they are welcome! And help is available if you aren’t familiar with the steps to get started. Sometimes establishing a new YRE Start Point takes time and it’s best to begin ASAP. Please talk to Jan or Earl.
