Fred Meyer Fishers Landing – Jan Breneman

In mid-February, the podium-style walk box at Fishers Landing Fred Meyer was vandalized. The lid had been ripped from the base and was found in two pieces, with most of the hinge screws loose or gone. Fortunately, there was no permanent damage and nothing seemed to be missing.

Earl Bowen came up with the idea of a temporary self-service file box, with a note in the original spot explaining the move, and helped Jan load the large box into her car after the March 2 group walk. Box monitor Jill McLean alerted Fred Meyer of a security breach and asked their Customer Service desk to handle the box for a week or two while repairs were made. With customary grace, their manager agreed. Jan organized bare-bones materials (stamp, registration sheets, etc) and took the temporary box to the store. Ted repaired the podium box even sooner than thought and everything was back to normal within two days. Now that’s a lesson in efficiency – thanks everyone!

If you arrive at any YRE location and see something off-kilter, please notify the walk monitor or a club representative immediately. The sooner repairs are made or supplies replenished, the better for all.

Things to remember and put on your calendar:

   1)  Annual Meeting Pot Luck and Elections June 10 at the Clark PUD building across from the library.

    2)  Two officers can not run for re-election so will need someone to take those positions, President and Vice-President.  They are not difficult or hard jobs.

    3)  Please volunteer to help with the May Walk at Moulton Falls, May 10th.

Lets make ourselves as volkssport walkers a good example.  I have noticed lately that walkers are dropping papers and candy wrappers along the route, and/or walking 2 to 4 abreast down the sidewalk with no concern for other people walking.

Thanks to everyone who helped at the Firstenburg Walk; volunteers help make a walk a success and a good experience for the other walkers.

Walks from the Past – Joe Titone

A walk in Los Angeles: Over the years the motion picture business used various parts of the city as the center both for production and where the stars lived.  Today, many star homes are in the very upscale areas of Beverly Hills, Brentwood and Bel-Air, but in the early silent days, Franklin Heights was where the stars lived.  Adjoining Griffith Park and the currently more upscale Los Feliz district, Franklin Heights has seen better days, but some of the early movie star homes are still being lived in.

The Shakespeare Bridge leads into Franklin Heights

You encounter many unusual staircases while walking in this hilly neighborhood, but the visual highlight is the Villa Giuseppi, a 9½ acre Tuscan estate containing a 23,000 square foot mansion which was home to a family of 3 in the early 1900s.  The owner was not a movie star but the president of a Packard dealership and the head of a radio station.  This estate is used frequently by the studios whenever they need an Italian setting.

HEADS UP! Just to let you know  -  Jan Breneman

·        The seasonal walks at Ridgefield and North Bonneville will open April 1. Either join us on a Weekend Group Walk (N. Bonneville April 12), or plan to go later with a friend. These are A-1 routes!

·        The next meeting of the Evergreen State Volkssport Association will be held on Sunday, April 6, at the Border Crossers walk in Woodland. This is a great chance to meet the state officers and see “official” processes in action. For more information, contact Earl Bowen.

·        Matt Nipper, M.S., an Exercise Physiologist, attended the Firstenburg walk and offered to speak at a future club meeting. Arrangements have now been made for the May 13 date. Please plan to attend! More information will be sent out next month.

·        Our Annual Meeting and June Potluck will be held on June 10 at the downtown community room of Clark Public Utilities. This is always a fun event – mark it on your calendar!

Weekend Walking is back.  Check our web site for the schedule:

If you’re doing the AWW challenge, we’ll be doing many of the AWW YREs during these walks.  It’s a great chance to walk with a group and work on completing your challenge card.  Remember we’ll always have 2 leaders, one at the front, and one at the rear so if you’re slower or want to walk a lesser distance, someone can help you.
