| Cape Horn Seasonal Hike; Y0756. July 1 - September 30; 11km, Rated
4+ (Note delayed start date from Starting Point book) |
Brand new this year. The Cape
Horn Hike, 10 miles east of Washougal, is for only the most fit and adventurous
hiker. It is relatively new, very rugged, and growing in local popularity.
Features lush forests and streams, talus slopes, rocky outcroppings, seasonal
wildflowers, and many expansive views of the Columbia River and its
one-of-a-kind Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. You will walk on top of
the longest railroad tunnel in the gorge and behind Cape Horn Falls, with views
of several other gorge waterfalls. The Cape Horn summit is the site of a future
state park. Elevation gain: 1400 feet. REMOTE START; register and drive 10 miles
east on SR-14.
See clear remnants of navigation beacons and horns, which were used to guide
floatplanes carrying mail between Pasco, WA and Portland, OR during the 1920s
and 1930s… legend also has it that bootleggers used part of this trail to get
product down to the river.
Restrooms available at
registration and trailhead
parking lot.
Carry extra water (none on trail), hiking poles and wear sturdy shoes. Camera
and snacks/lunch also suggested. Allow plenty of time to complete the loop. Unsuitable
for strollers or wheelchairs. Leashed
pets allowed with proper cleanup. WSC:
